Sharing On Tommy Kirk’s Passing

My friend of many decades, Tommy Kirk, was found dead last night. You will surely recall his string of Disney movies; “Shaggy Dog. Ol’ Yeller,” etc.
Tommy was intensely private. He lived alone in Las Vegas, close to his friend…and “Ol Yeller” co-star, Bev Washburn…and it was she who called me this morning.
Tommy was gay and estranged from what remains of his blood-family. We in A Minor Consideration are Tommy’s family. Without apology.
We will take care of this.
Please know that Tommy Kirk loved you, his fans. You lifted him up when an Industry let him down in 1965. He was not bitter. His church comforted him. May God have mercy on his soul.

HE WAS A DISNEY SUPERSTAR IN HIS DAY
Tommy Kirk has died at the age of 79.
Generations of us grew up on his movies.
Here’s just a partial list: “Old Yeller,” “Swiss Family Robinson,” “Babes In Toyland,” “The Absent-Minded Professor,” “The Shaggy Dog, “Son of Flubber” and “Pajama Party.” He was also a part of “The Mickey Mouse Club.” He’s seen in the photo here with Annette Funicello.
Original Mouseketeer Paul Petersen tells me Tommy was found in his bed by his longtime friend and “Old Yeller” co-star, Beverly Washburn.
Paul proudly told me Tommy was in “some of the best movies for young people Disney ever produced.” Paul is now helping to plan his funeral.
Thanks for all that entertainment over the years, Tommy. May you R.I.P.
Tommy Kirk, a Disney Legend who starred in the classic “Old Yeller” and appeared opposite Annette Funicello in Disney’s “The Shaggy Dog” and beach party films including “Pajama Party,” has died at 79
From faithful dogs to absent-minded professors to Martians needing women to pajama parties and invisible bikinis, Tommy Kirk was an underused, under-appreciated, reliable talent. RIP. pic.twitter.com/pv9eYUXeao

Sad news for several generations. I also enjoyed him in his American International teen flicks, even when they were awful (which was often), since he had a genuine comedic bent. May #TommyKirk rest in peace.

Sad to read of the death of Tommy Kirk, so wonderful in “Old Yeller,” and a huge, huge Disney star (“The Shaggy Dog,” “Swiss Family Robinson,” “The Misadventures of Merlin Jones,” “Escapade in Florence,” etc.) fired by Walt for being gay. pic.twitter.com/eLqKO0w9i9

I don’t really wanna do the “I guess Heaven needed—” schtick, but I kinda have to since he was in Mars Needs Women…
I guess Heaven needed Tommy Kirk.
Say hi to Annette & Yvonne for us, sir.
Watching Pajama Party tonight in his honor. #RIP

Farewell, sweet boyhood crush, Tommy Kirk. His was not an untroubled life, but he knew who he was, and that means much. “I’m not ashamed of being gay, never have been, and never will be. For that I make no apologies.” Rest In Peace. pic.twitter.com/nGPHqcvK84
