Thursday night accident in the Branford claimed the life of a 53-year-old man, identified by authorities as William Vahouten.

Vahouten was hit and killed by Amtrak train 178 – the Northeast Regional traveling from Washington D.C., to Boston. According to report, Vahouten was a said to be a trespasser.

It was reported that Amtrak train 178 hit a “trespasser on the tracks” at 9:54 p.m.

“Officers located a deceased male, approximately 50 yrs old,” police said. “Amtrak Police will be leading the investigation and will be able to release further details as their investigation progresses.”

“This is a critical reminder about the importance of exercising caution around railroad tracks and crossings,” Amtrak said.
