This has left their families and friends in a mourning mood. They say the four men were friendly and caring and well-known on Des Moines’ east side.
These men had big dreams for the future and had goals set out for themselves.
McBride graduated from Saydel while Welsher and the Van Gundys graduated from Des Moines’ East High School.
McBride had the dream to build his own house in Des Moines where he could write music and train dogs.
According to Zach’s Father, Mark McBride: “I always told him that you can talk and talk and talk, but a goal isn’t a goal until it’s written down. And he had it written down.”
Welsher’s dream was to become a traveling electrician and hike the Appalachian Trail after he’s done with his electrician’s apprenticeship.
The brothers, the Van Gundys were best friends who moved in together in January, and had followed in their parents’ footsteps at a Des Moines design and contracting company.
A vigil was held for the four men by their friends and family on Wednesday, July 8, 2020. This was to honor their memories.
According to Des Moines Police reports on the crash, the vehicle Welsher was driving veered off the roadway, struck a tree and caught fire, killing the four men.
Another victim involved, 22, Rheanna Ames, of West Des Moines was injured during the crash and was rushed to the hospital after she was extricated from the wreck. She is in a stable condition now.
