Deputy William K. Nichols Death – The Walton County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed the death of a DeSoto County Sheriff’s Deputy who died after rescuing his son from drowning in Sandestin, Florida on Wednesday evening, July 22, 2020.
The WCSD has identified the victim as 33-year-old Deputy William K. Nichols.

According to authorities, Nichols was pulled out from the water after saving his son who was having trouble in the water.
Nichols son made it back to the shore, but unfortunately Nichols was pulled back into the water
Until his death, Deputy Nichols was with the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department and was the Director of Search and Rescue.
When Nichols was pulled out of water, CPR was immediately performed on him and was later taken to Sacred Heart Hospital where he later pass on, says the Chief Deputy Smith.
In Chief Smith’s words, he said the motto on their patch is “So that others may live” and that Deputy Nichols died doing just that.
According to the Walton County Sheriff’s Department on their Facebook page, “We have no words to express our devastation. Our hearts go out to his family and our brothers and sisters in Desoto County. Rest In Peace, brother. We have the watch.”
The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department will release an official statement on Thursday.
