Gisèle Halimi Death | Obituary – Gisèle Halimi sadly passed away,  Halimi was born in La Goulette, Tunisia, on 27 July 1927 to a Jewish mother and a Berber father. She was educated at a French lycée in Tunis, and then attended the University of Paris, graduating in law and philosophy.

“I’m saddened to learn the passing of Gisèle Halimi, a great advocate for women’s rights. We need these kinds of women so badly right now.”

Her childhood and the ways in which she blends a Jewish-Muslim identity are discussed in her memoir, Le lait de l’oranger. She was first married to Paul Halimi, and then to Claude Faux.

In 1948 Halimi qualified as a lawyer and has practiced at the Paris bar since 1956. She acted as a counsel for the Algerian National Liberation Front, most notably for the tortured activist Djamila Boupacha in 1960, and wrote a book in 1961 (with an introduction by Simone de Beauvoir) to plead her case. She has also defended Basque terrorists and has been counsel in many cases related to women’s issues, such as the Bobigny abortion trial of 1972 which attracted national attention.

We are never ready to say goodbye forever even though we know it is a part of life. This day our hearts are heavy for losing someone so special, but as we mourn your death, we also celebrate your life. Rest in peace.

It always seems like we have all the time in the world, only to realize how fleeting it really is. We wish we had more time to do and say the things we saved for later which along with you is gone forever. We promise to keep you alive in Our memories.

Even in death, you are still loved and forever will be. You have touched the hearts of so many who owe you a lifetime of gratitude. We are not saying goodbye forever but goodbye for now. We pray you find peace and rest wherever you are.

We express our sympathy and deepest condolences to Gisèle Halimi’s family today and in the days, weeks, months, and years that are to come as they cope with her passing. May her soul rest in peace.
