Today I heard about the passing of a very dear photographer friend and I am devastated. Johan Wilke was someone who I worked with so often with the Rooi Rose Magazine team that we became like a family, he made set life so much fun and always went the extra mile for his clients. I will miss laughing with him. I will miss chirping him. I will miss calling him “Oom”. Rest In Peace Dear Johan. My condolences to his daughter Betsy and family

my first employer after graduating. An iconic fashion and beauty photographer who will be remembered for his kindness. Although his studio was crazy busy he always made time to help those who needed it, photographers and non-photographers. Johan showed me that it is possible to work for yourself and to make a living with your camera. Johan, his art and adventures will be missed by many. Thank you for everything. When I was an 18 year old student I was asked by a fellow student if he could take my photo for a portrait assignment I was not keen at all but he said I was different with freckles and red hair I eventually said yes, as he asked so kindly. Johan Wilke I followed your career and always admired your talent. RIP and thank you for spoiling us with your magnificent work.
We have lost a great photographer. Johan was one of the first photographers I assisted while I was still a student at Rhodes University. He took this photo of me a few years later for SARIE Tydskrif, Condolences to his friends and family.
