Rishabh Shah Death – The Ontario Provincial Police on Tuesday, August 4 released the identity of a man who drowned over the weekend in Halfway Lake as 23-year-old Rishabh Shah, of Sudbury.

After a report of a possible drowning in Halfway Lake at the Halfway Lake Provincial Park, Antrim Township, the Nipissing West OPP and Sudbury Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene.

According to police statement, the preliminary investigation revealed that, “a group of seven people went out on Halfway Lake at approximately 6 p.m.. Three males were in one canoe, two males in another canoe and two kayaks had sole occupants.”

“One of the kayaks capsized an hour into the trip, and one of the three men in the canoe jumped into the water to try and help his friend.”

“As he jumped out, the canoe overturned, thus sending the other two males in the water.”

“One of the males went under water and was subsequently located by one of his friends in a semi-conscious state.”

Shah, who appears to be the one who went underwater was taken to shore and then to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The police continues, “All seven individuals were not wearing a life jacket nor did they have any life jackets or lifesaving equipment on board.  Alcohol was not involved.”

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The investigation is still ongoing and being handled by the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

There’s also no foul play suspected.
