“Bernard Stiegler, perhaps the most important French theorist to come after Derrida, has died. He was one of the most important thinkers about the effects of digital technology showing us clearly the hidden cost that the Anthropocene is confronting us with, with our society’s approach to pleasure, belief and illusion. He had a very unique path to becoming a philosopher by drifting from political activism to nihilism, leading to criminality and incarceration for armed robbery! His concepts of ‘savoir-vivre’ and ‘object of addiction’ will stick for a long time with us. In “The Neganthropocene”, he distanced himself from the general nihilism brought on by the era of climate chaos and spoke of moving beyond the dead-end banality of the Anthropocene. He begins the book with the sentence: “A new critique of anthropology, both philosophical and positive: did this not become necessary from the moment in 2004 when we saw Claude Lévi-Strauss on television admitting that he is preparing to depart a world he no longer loves?’ On the other hand, Stiegler points out that beyond the Anthropocene, there is the Neguanthropocene, a coming era in which thinking means taking care. This gives me hope and comfort that Stiegler did not leave this world with the same impression as Lévi-Strauss.”
