Preliminary investigation revealed that Grier was swimming in Factory Shoals Park on Tuesday afternoon when he started having trouble in the water.
His mother’s boyfriend identified as 38-year-old Antonio Perry went in to rescue him but was swept under water.
Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown explains: “After the teenager swam out, it appeared that the teenager may have gotten into trouble. After a few seconds, the boyfriend then decided to go out and attempt to rescue the teenager. After the attempt to rescue the teenager, the adult male was succumbed by the rapids.”
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the sheriff’s office were the search team who worked tirelessly to recover the bodies. Perry was found on Wednesday and Grier on Thursday morning.
Sheriff Brown in a press release said: “The sheriff’s office, we extend our greatest sympathies to the families who have lost these loved ones during this unprecedented time and we know that it’s difficult because of the fact that we cannot grieve our loved ones during these times. So, I want the family to know and the community to know that they have our greatest sympathy at this time,” said Sheriff Brown.
According to the sheriff, the park is a popular, but dangerous place for people to swim.
“Make sure that you try to stay away from the rapids. Try to keep within calmer waters and I would say as close to the banks as you possibly can. You extend yourself or you venture off into the rapids and you could very easily be pulled under and that particular area there, it’s a problematic area for the greatest swimmers,” warns Brown.
The Sheriff plans to meet with officials from the fire department and DNR to try to place indications for safe places for people to swim at the park.
