Nygaard, 23, passed away July 22, 2020, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colorado.Connor was born Dec. 13, 1996, in Wichita, Kansas. Later, he moved with his family to Memphis, Tennessee, before settling in his mother’s home town, Anthony, Kansas.He was a 2015 graduate of Chaparral High School in Harper County, Kansas.Shortly after high school, Connor moved to Colorado where he lived and worked, prior to enlisting in 2018. Following graduation from basic training, Connor attended technical training at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi, then was assigned to the 50th Space Communications Squadron at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colorado.The 50th SCS, part of the U.S. Space Force, operates and supports nearly 200 satellites used by the U.S. Department of Defense, NATO, and other allies.In July, 2019, Connor was honored with a unit coin, presented by the Command Chief Master Sergeant of the 50th Space Wing. The honor was for an essay Connor wrote, titled “Why I Wear the Uniform.” That essay was featured, and is available on the Schriever Air Force Base website.Connor was bright, polite, respectful, and had a quiet, but wicked sense of humor.He was a huge fan of cinema, computers, and loved to discuss film and video production techniques with his dad, and was doing audio-visual work in his spare time, when he wasn’t taking college classes available through the Air Force. He planned to pursue a Business degree to accompany the various computer certifications gained through his service.He is survived by his mother, Brinda Messick Nygaard, Anthony, Kansas; father, Brad (Cecile Wehrman), Crosby, North Dakota; brother Colin, Anthony, Kansas; grandmother Susan Messick, Broomfield, Colorado; uncles, Kevin (Chrissy) Messick, Lafayette, Colorado, Brian (Cynde) Messick, San Diego, California; Rick Nygaard, Grand Forks, North Dakota; John (Terry Layfield) Nygaard, Grand Forks, North Dakota; cousins Sophie, Joshua, Rylee and Kenzie Messick, Shannon Nygaard, Stacey Lindholm, and numerous extended family in Texas, Colorado, Kansas, North Dakota, and across the country.Connor was preceded in death by his grandfather Terry Messick, his aunt, Marilyn Nygaard and grandparents Bob and Connie Nygaard.
