He died at his home in Hamden on the 18th of August 2020 at the age of 88. Alan Trachtenberg was the Neil Gray Jr. Professor of English and professor of American studies emeritus, scholar of the cultural history of the 19th and 20th centuries, and one of the leaders in establishing the pre-eminence of American studies at Yale.
Trachtenberg is popularly known as one of the most distinguished and authoritative interpreters of what photographers have shown about history through the camera lens. Alan Trachtenberg who was born in 1932 and died in 2020 showed everyone how to read the world of American images in ways that rewrote the political, social and economic boundaries of our times.
