I’m very saddened over the last day trying to process the death of an extraordinary human being who I was proud to know for a short time, Mr. Stephen Wandzy.
I graduated from Windsor Locks High School in Connecticut in 1989. It was a small but proud town just a few miles north of Hartford. I only lived in “The Locks” for five years (8th grade through graduation). I was a shy kid and formed relatively few close relationships in the short time I was there. Still, even at a young age, I could see what everyone else saw – Steve was special.
Steve was our valedictorian. He was a smart guy and he hit the books, but he found plenty of time to nurture his other talents, whether it was tennis or saxophone. A true polymath, he could’ve been and done anything he wanted. After graduation, he went to study at Connecticut College, a highly-selective and rigorous liberal arts college with a tremendous reputation. It was a perfect place for someone like Steve – a self-directed learner who highly valued education for its own sake.
Years later (through the wonders of Facebook, which provides folks like me some heartfelt glimpses at the lives of those I knew from yesteryear), I learned that Steve became a math teacher at our old high school. A guy who could’ve travelled the world and planted himself into (and succeeded at) any of hundreds of professions… came back to his roots. Not surprisingly, he was a teacher widely respected by his colleagues and beloved by his students. In my mind’s eye, I can see him using his considerable talents and skills to foster that same love of learning among his students. I’m sure the consequences of the pandemic on his students cut deeply into Steve; it’s palpable in a video message he left the graduating class of 2020.
Steve and I were not close but, like everyone else, I deeply admired him. He was clearly an intelligent guy, but his smarts were balanced with outsized humility. He was accomplished, but shared his gifts with everyone blessed to be in his orbit. Whenever he was around me, he was unfailingly kind and gracious.
Words will fail to wholly capture how I felt about Steve, but this will have to do… Steve was a wonderful guy who did his best to maximize the gifts that God bestowed on him, and he role modeled it in such a way that inspired me to want to be a better version of myself.
I can’t imagine the grief and sense of loss that my former classmates, some of them his closest lifelong friends, must be feeling. Too, he leaves behind a grieving family who knows far better than me the totality of this singular loss. To them, I can only offer my heartfelt sympathies for the loss of this profoundly decent human being. To God, I pray that He takes our friend to his heavenly home.
Steve, your example, your virtue, and your kindness will always be before us. Thank you for sharing your life with so many others in ways that were so deep and lasting. May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Toast to Stephen Arthur Wandzy in the Bravakis household.

Etienne I will see you in the next life my blood brother. First round is on you!
