Chris Caserta Missing: Family and friends fear the worst for Aussie jockey missing after a late-night beach swim
News reaching us this morning reveals that a search and rescue operation is underway for jockey Chris Caserta after the well-known hoop went missing during a late-night swim at a Gold Coast beach on Wednesday.
Popular 26-year-old Victorian jockey Chris Caserta disappeared during a swim at Surfers Paradise Beach at about 10 pm on Wednesday night before becoming trapped in a rip.
Queensland Police said Caserta and a 25-year-old woman – believed to be trackwork rider Amy Graham – were both in the water when passersby heard screaming. Members of the public reportedly helped the woman back to shore, but Mr. Chris vanished from sight.
Senior Sergeant Jay Notaro said due to the length of time Mr. Caserta had been missing, there is little hope he will be found alive. “Unfortunately I had the heartbreaking job of telling Chris’ parents this is not a search and rescue. He said “We are searching for Chris’ body as the time frame for survival has passed,”
According to the report, Land, sea, and aerial searches have been recommenced, with police, lifeguards, rangers, and Volunteer Marine Rescue volunteers all involved. Coastal areas from the south of Stradbroke Island off Brisbane, to Gold Coast’s Burleigh Heads, are being searched.
Mr. Notaro said “We will continue the search and our goal is to return Chris to his family,” He said, “It is an absolute tragedy at any time.” He also said search efforts had been impacted by recent rain and strong winds but will continue today.
He thanked the bystanders on the beach for comforting the woman involved, and for immediately alerting police of Mr. Caserta’s disappearance. Close friends of Mr. Caserta have joined the search.
Jayden Lloyd said “Last night I gave him a ring and that’s regular for me and him, we’re obviously very tight,” “He doesn’t have a bad bone in his body it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.”
Hall of Fame trainer Chris Waller said the racing community was devastated by the news. “He was a beautiful boy and we are all just hoping for a miracle.”
