Andy Barnes,
There are people in my life whose names immediately bring back some of the best memories of Scarborough and coming of age. Your name is one of them. You were my very first pro barber. Not the first barber to cut my hair, mind you… but the first barber I chose to put my trust in, to make sure my hair always looked crisp every week. And if you’re Black, particularly a Black man, you know how important picking your first barber was/is… because it’s probably one of the earliest opportunities we get to self-determine as young Black men. You were the coolest barber to me. You already had a rep in the streets as one of the best. You were quick on the cut and serious about your art. You were the first barber I knew that did appointments only… and when you opened your own shop I just remember being really really proud of you. To this day, ‘Andy’s Bio’ is the sickest barbershop name I’ve ever heard. But our connection went beyond barbering. The first car I ever owned was a ‘souped up’ white Mazda 929 I bought off you. I said you were one of the coolest barbers I knew, and part of your coolness was that car. I didn’t know heated seats was even a thing until you took me for a spin in your veeks… it’s also likely why I felt no ways about buying it on my very first credit card… and getting my first taste of serious debt, smh, lol. It was riding in that car with you that I first got put on to Harry Toddler… and to this day the Bada Bada riddim is one of my all time favorites bcuz of you. Music was definitely where we bonded the most, and I remember having some of the best convos about hops, classic house and 80s freestyle music while sitting in your chair. I’m sitting here looking back at our texts and this random one from 2014 sums up your love of music perfectly to me…
Over the years we grew apart. My work schedule meant I couldn’t come to you for a cut anymore, but we’d check in on each other every now and then. We talked about the tough times you’d been going through. We talked about ways to deal with it, and not a month would go by when you didn’t cross my mind. So learning about your passing today knocked the wind out of me. This pandemic has wreaked havoc on everything I’ve come to know as normal… and while the cause of your death is unknown to me… right now, I’m not only mourning your passing, but the reality that the many MANY Scarborough peeps who knew you, cared about you and loved you… won’t be able to mourn and celebrate your life and legacy, the way we all know your life and legacy deserves to be celebrated. Andy Barnes, my brother, may you rest in power. Love, Your life long friend and customer, Ty
