Bashir Zaheer is described by his family as the “perfect man.”
Samir, his brother-in-law spoke to NCA NewsWire that Bashir had lived and worked in the building in Pyrmont for 15 years after moving from Afghanistan via India.
According to Samir, “He was a normal guy. He has a normal life … he lived here he worked here, everyone knew him.”
He continues by describing the deceased as a devout Muslim, a kind man, ready to help everybody
About 3:30 p.m, Bashir’s body was brought out of the apartment building, where he was found gruesomely stabbed early in the morning.
A woman was seen falling to the ground and the family screaming out his name as his body was carried out.
According to the acting Superintendent Sean Heaney,on Thursday several people witnessed the horrific stabbing in the lobby of the Bunn St complex.
“They’re distraught, as you can imagine. Very, very distraught,”says Heaney.
“Same as the police and other emergency services that turned up not long after.”
Supt Heaney said witnesses reported the man was stabbed during an argument with another man wearing a blue suit who was “known” to him.
It is understood the man, described as being between 35 and 40 years old and of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance, was wearing a security guard outfit.
Mr Zaheer Former brother-in-law AJ, described the deceased as the “light of our community.”
“No one can say a bad word about him. You want perfect? He was the perfect man,” says AJ.
“He prayed five times a day, didn’t drink alcohol … his two sisters relied on him. What a guy.”
According to AJ the pair had grown up together, and Mr Zaheer had moved to Australia in his 20s.
The deceased started working at the Pyrmont apartment block for $10 per hour.
He worked 20 hours a day and worked his way up to being a manager before starting a security company.
“Now, he owns six units just here … he owns 20, 30 across Sydney,” AJ says
“He built this empire from nothing.”
Devastated Mr Zaheer’s family said they did not know who was behind the brutal murder, but according to AJ, the killer would “get what is coming to him.”
Police started investigation immediately and are looking for a white Holden Viva – registration plate AM23CQ – which the alleged attacker ran to before fleeing the scene behind the wheel.
According to Supt. Heaney, “The person driving that car is the man we want to speak to.”
“We don’t believe he’s armed but he has been involved in the death of this man, so we consider him very dangerous.”
Heaney continues by saying if the vehicle is seen, the public should not approach the man or the car, but call triple-0 or Crime Stoppers.
All security footage from the scene and the surrounding areas are being explored currently by the police.
At 8 a.m, the emergency services were called to the apartment complex in Bunn St.
Bashir’s body was found in the lobby with multiple stab wounds, says NSW Ambulance to NCA NewsWire.
An occupant of the building identified as Cameron Slaughter, said he was returning from the gym about 8.15am when he was confronted by the chaotic scene.
“I looked inside the lobby and noticed it was filled with paramedics. There was a stretcher there and they had started putting blankets around him,” he said.
According to Slaughter, it was a safe building and suburb given there were often security personnel across the road at the Novotel.
“I was very shocked to see what was going on,” he said.
Inspector Nadia Tomlinson, NSW Ambulance duty operations manager said arriving at the job was “quite intense”.
“This type of injury can cause significant damage, and our paramedics were tremendous in providing treatment to the man, but despite their best efforts, there was nothing more they could do.”
“When your job is to try and save a life, it is always tough for all emergency services when you get an outcome like this.”
Investigation is still ongoing
