Swear it was just yesterday I was calling to break the news to you about Phil. It’s a crazy world bro. You were my best friend in fifth grade at Winding Springs Elementary and looked out for me whenever I needed you. I didn’t realize it then, but you were the biggest kid in our grade because you were older than everybody! ? When that girl in art class got mad and started swinging on me, you understood why I never tried hitting her back. From line-dancing in gym class to our Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer performance, you were my right hand. Phil and I switched to JT Williams magnet school the next year, but you still walked over to play basketball in Highland Creek until we moved to Chicago and then back to Atlanta for good.
Fast forward to when my brother and his family relocated back to Charlotte a few years back and somehow, someway you two reconnected. I know you had gone through some things by this time and Phil was helping you get back on your feet and create some legit hustles. When Phil was tragically killed in 2018, it wasn’t until many months later that I was finally able to reach you to break the news. I can still here you crying in my ear. I know things had only gotten more complicated since then and you reached out a few times to let me know that things were never the same. I can agree, as I’ve still been coming to terms with Phil’s death myself. I never imagined I’d be learning of your tragic murder this soon after. I wish I’d made more of an effort to reach back out to you and to check up on you. We were brothers grown apart. I weep mostly for your children. May your soul Rest In Peace, Billy McKay. You and Phil Hayes Jr. be good.
