Brett Henderson, a popular figure in the Capitol community as a legislative staffer, lobbyist and consultant for the past 28 years, died Wednesday. He was 50.

Known for his kindness, humor, affinity for sports (he was an avid fan of Michigan State University athletics), love of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (he once dressed up as Mr. Petty to a Halloween party), expertise in a wide array of public policy and keen understanding of politics, Mr. Henderson’s death left those who work in and around the Capitol stunned and grieving his sudden loss.

Mr. Henderson got his start in the Michigan Senate in the 1990s on the staff of Sen. Joanne Emmons, a Big Rapids Republican. He later became chief of staff to Sen. Joel Gougeon, a Bay City Republican.

After leaving the Legislature, he worked for two of Lansing’s larger multiclient lobbying firms with a stint at a public relations firm. About four years ago, he started his own consulting practice, Henderson Consulting, with a focus on the burgeoning marijuana business in the state.

Mr. Henderson once said on his profile page at work that he took a relentless approach to lobbying.

“There are many paths to any desired goal,” he said. “Keep digging, keep connecting with the right people, tirelessly pursue your client’s objectives, and you’ll get there.”

Mr. Henderson is survived by his wife, Hillary Henderson, and three children.
