Charlie Robert Griffin Death | Charlie Robert Griffin Obituary – Charlie Robert Griffin age 28 of Chipley has been identified as the victim found dead on a dirt rode Jeffery Blvd. The deceased appeared to have suffered from gunshot wounds. Griffin’s body was sent to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. After talking with Griffin’s family, we were able to identify a person that Mr. Griffin was said to have left his residence with on Wednesday night.

On August 13th at approximately 8:18 a.m. residents discovered a body on dirt rode Jeffery Blvd. The deceased appeared to have suffered from gunshot wounds. We were able to determine the victim had been shot multiple times.
There was no ID on the deceased. Late afternoon we were able to identify the body as, 28-year-old, Charlie Robert Griffin of Chipley. Mr. Griffin’s body was sent to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. After talking with Griffin’s family, we were able to identify a person that Mr. Griffin left his residence with on Wednesday night.
At approximately 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, we were able to make contact with, Jeremy Cole Long, 26-year-old, Chipley resident. Long was the last person Griffin was seen with on August 13th. Long admitted that he and a friend were supposed to pick up Griffin and carry him to Dothan to purchase drugs. Long identified his friend as Joshua Caleb Cumbie. Long stated that Griffin owed Cumbie’s wife $400.00 dollars. Long said that the plan was to rob Griffin on this night. On August 14th at 3:38 p.m., Long was arrested and charged with murder while in commission of a felony.
During the course of the investigation, we were looking for the second suspect, 28-year-old, Joshua Caleb Cumbie, also a Chipley resident. Cumbie fled the area with his wife and two small children. On Saturday, Cumbie contacted Sheriff Kevin Crews. Sheriff Crews attempted to talk Cumbie into turning himself in. All Cumbie would comment is “I am 1000 miles away and I want to spend more time with my boy.”
On Monday August 17th at around 7:27 a.m. Cumbie called Sheriff Crews again. Cumbie said, “he has went as far as he can go and he was at Central Park in New York City letting his kids play.” Sheriff Crews was able to keep Cumbie on the phone for approximately 1½ hours and negotiate a peaceful surrender. Cumbie was taken into custody this morning at approximately 8:54 a.m. in New York City. Cumbie was charged with an open count of murder.
