The gathering had over 100 people, says D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham to reporters at a news conference.

An altercation erupted during the gathering,  and “multiple weapons were produced,” by at least three individuals who then opened fire into the crowd, says Newsham.

According to Newsham, Brown was among the two teens who were shot and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Report about the injured off-duty D.C. police officer says that she was transported to the hospital in very serious condition.

“She is struggling for her life right now,” says Newsham.

Brown’s mother, Artecka Brown, told local reporters that the family has been devastated all day.  She said Brown was the father of a 1-year-old child and had another child on the way, and the family is still working to process the news.

“Just an innocent kid’s life taken away,” Artecka Brown said of her son.

According to the D.C. Fire Department, nine of the victims rushed to the hospitals suffered serious to critical injuries.
The police believes that two injured persons who were found outside of the gathering and taken to hospitals may have been linked to the shooting.

One was picked up from a location away from the gathering while another came to a firehouse, says a D.C. Fire.

According to Mayor Muriel Bowser’s statement to reporters, “Sadly several people who have no regard for human life opened fire at what had been people together, enjoying themselves.”

Investigation is still ongoing for witnesses and clues. So far no arrests have been made.
