The authorities says, Thompson was trying to get his hat from the water at Deer Creek State Park before he jumped into the water without a life jacket, and was unable to keep his head above water.
As other members of the boat called 911, one of the boat’s occupant jumped in to help Thompson but was already late.
The search for Thompson began with a law enforcement ranger with Utah State parks that responded first and later joined by the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team, Wasatch County Search and Rescue and the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office.
At 8:30pm, Thompson’s body was found by a dive team, 111 feet below water and 300 feet from shore.
Utah DNR urged boaters and swimmers to “always keep safety a top priority when recreating in Utah’s waterbodies.”
The department also extends its condolence to the Thompson’s family and friends.
