Derek Lee Harris Death | Obituary – 33-year-old Longmont man Derek Lee Harris killed in a motorcycle crash this weekend in Milliken.

About 6 p.m. Saturday, Derek Lee Harris, 33, of Longmont, was driving a motorcycle westbound on Colo. 60, while another driver was turning northbound onto Colo. 257 from Colo. 60. Police say both drivers attempted to beat the yellow light, nearly colliding in the intersection.

Harris’ motorcycle skidded and fell, as he received life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police said he was not wearing a helmet. The other driver was not injured.

The other driver, 45-year-old Araceli Gomez of Loveland, was cited for careless driving causing death, disregarding a traffic control device, failure to yield and failure to provide proof of insurance.

Milliken Police Chief Benito Garcia said those who are in a hurry going through intersections should keep in mind that split-second decisions make all difference for traffic safety.

“It takes just a few seconds for the light to turn green, so having a little bit more patience and waiting for the light to turn is probably more important than trying to beat the red,” Garcia said. “Just a few more seconds could have prevented this.”

We express our sympathy and deepest condolences to Derek Lee ’s family today and in the days, weeks, months, and years that are to come as they cope with his passing. May his soul rest in peace.
