Extremely sad to hear about the death of Beth Levine, one of the most relevant autophagy researchers in the field. Even though I only knew her through her work, I can draw a clear line between reading her papers and obtaining my PhD degree.

Remembering Beth Levine – a great influence on my career as the first and leading author of my first cell death paper – she made many more firsts, put “autophagy” on the map, changed science with her brilliance. We will miss Beth.

It breaks my heart to say good bye to my friend and colleague, Dr. Beth Levine. What Beth managed to accomplish in one short life time; as a scientist, as a physician, as a mentor, as a friend, as a mother, and as a human was truly extraordinary. We mourn the loss of a treasure.
