General Stanhope S. Spears Death | General Stanhope S. Spears Obituary – The world has lost an outstanding personality; General Stanhope S. Spears who recently passed away at the age of 83. Stanhope S. Spears of Columbia was a former S.C. Adjutant General. He died on Tuesday, 14th of July 2020. Spears was born April 23, 1937, in Clover, a small York County textile community about 20 miles northwest of Rock Hill. Spears was the Gamecocks’ quarterback during his four years as a student. He then joined the S.C. Air National Guard, switching to the S.C. Army National Guard in 1961.

According to the Department of Defense’s National Guard Bureau, beginning with his first assignment as a platoon leader in 1962, Spears commanded at all levels and was a director with the Palmetto Military Academy and a commander with Joint Forces Headquarters. Among numerous awards of merit and military decorations throughout his military service, in 1988, then-Gov. Carroll A. Campbell Jr. awarded Spears the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian honor for residents with extraordinary lifetime service and achievements of national or statewide significance.
