In my last conversation with Geoff, he was hoping to get back on Fresh Air and wanted to brainstorm topics. Such a vibrant mind to the very end.

Geoff Nunberg gave us The ham sandwich wants his check, a much deeper understanding of idioms and metonymy, and he brought linguistics to millions in his dozens of witty, erudite, enlightening essays delivered in his born-for-radio voice
He will be missed.

The first superstar prof to answer an email from me as a ravenously curious undergrad. Thank you @GeoffNunberg for fighting the good fight all these years. May you rest in peace ?

The wonderful Geoff Nunberg has died. Growing up, many dinner-table arguments involved calling him on speakerphone to yell “HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE NEOLOGISM.” He always answered with the kindness & humor you hear on the radio. Know he was as smart, generous, & funny as he seemed.

Very saddened to hear this. Beyond time in the classroom,
I fondly remember his speech at the I School’s 2019 commencement where he had a witty, smart, and sincere set of reflections about what makes the School of Information a unique and special place.— Richmond Wong (@richmondywong) August 12, 2020
It was a gift to be a colleague of @GeoffNunberg He was as witty, charming, insightful, and badass in person as he was on air.Conversations were exhilarating. I always left w/ new insights & ways of seeing. He was generous & pushed everyone to question & think deeply. What a loss

Geoff Nunberg has gone onto a higher “playing field”.
My daughter went into linguistics, etc, at Stanford and Harvard, after all those segments, weekly on “FRESH AIR”Thanks to Geoff and his host, Terry Gross.

Heartbroken to learn that we lost @GeoffNunberg after a long illness.
He was known to most people as the house linguist on NPRs @FreshAirRadio. A delightful, wise, and caring soul – and really funny. #RIP

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend, the brilliant writer, linguist and conversationalist, Geoff Nunberg. Geoff and I would always get together when one of us was on the other’s coast to kibbitz and share notes and outrages.
