Jessica Batie Death – The Missouri State Highway Patrol Major Crash Team are investigating the head-on collision that occurred Thursday night, July 16, 2020 which took the lives of both vehicle drivers.
At about 10:00 p.m Thursday night, the officials reopened the roadway to all traffic users, says Cpl. J.L. Prewitt of Troop D.

17-year-old Jessica Batie, of Joplin, Missouri was driving westbound in a 1999 Honda CRV before the collision, says the Jasper County Deputy Coroner, George Woodard.
Woodard pronounced Batie dead at the scene.
A passenger in the 1999 Honda CRV, a 12-year-old girl, of Joplin, Missouri, suffered serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
The second vehicle driver identified as 24-year-old Baylee Shorter, of Carthage, Missouri, was driving eastbound in a 2008 Ford Taurus. She crossed the center line striking Batie’s vehicle head-on. Shorter was taken to the hospital were she was later pronounced dead.
A passenger of the 2008 Ford Taurus, 17-year-old Makayla Suter, of Joplin, Missouri, was seriously injured.
According to official report, Shorter’s vehicle was eastbound on RT HH, crossed the centerline and struck Batie’s vehicle head-on.
According to records, this marks Troop D’s 57th fatality of 2020, compared to the 54 fatalities in 2019.
