Reports says, Bankhead was wading in the water with two young relatives when they started having trouble getting to shore due to the size of the waves.
According to Stiff, Bankhead went farther into the water to help the children and was able to get one of them to shore safely. The other child was able to make it to shore as well, but Bankhead was swept underwater by the strong wave, says Stiff.
The Milwaukee Fire Department’s Dive Rescue Team and Milwaukee Police Department responded to the scene and assisted in the search for Bankhead.
Bankhead was found and received life-saving measures before being transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Both of the children were unharmed and neither required medical attention, Stiff concludes.
