Marjorie Florence Flaherty Death | Obituary – Marjorie Florence Flaherty age 100 passed away peacefully.
Marjorie’s daughter, Brenda Parsons, says Plymouth played a huge part in her mother’s “full and happy life” and says she was proud to be a Plymothian every day.
Marjorie was born on March 12, 1920 and died on July 7, 2020, a few months after her 100th birthday.
Her funeral took place on Tuesday, July 21.
In a thoughtful letter to the people of Plymouth, which she has asked PlymouthLive to share, Brenda says none of us will ever find a more staunch lover of Plymouth.
Brenda wrote: “Thank you Plymouth and its people.
“Plymouth: a special city to live in and tribute to my mum whose funeral was July 21, 2020.
“Marjorie Flaherty, born Smyth, lived 100 years of our city’s history and was proud to be a Plymothian every day of those 100 years.
“As a young girl, she lived by Victoria Park and went to Oxford Street Primary School and later Devonport High School for Girls.
“She was a Brownie and Guide at St Barnabas’ Church where she was married – some may still remember the church, though no longer there.
“She knew what it was like to live in a city being bombed and was a V.A.D. [nurse volunteer] and an air raid warden during the war.
“I remember her talking about lying on the ground on Eldad Hill with Dad on top of her, while bombs dropped around them while he was home on leave.
“She remembered seeing hundreds of little boats moored in the River Tamar and next day they had all gone.
“A war wedding meant rations and no teeth for some – but everyone helped put it together: a parachute silk dress and grandma’s coupons.”
We express our sympathy and deepest condolences to Marjorie Florence Flaherty’s family today and in the days, weeks, months, and years that are to come as they cope with her passing. May her soul rest in peace.
