According to his wife of 19 years Vanessa Rawlings-Jackson, Roeves has been in ill health for some time. Vanessa helped him battle lung cancer in 2007.
Roeves was an adopted Scottish, but was actually born in Sunderland in 1937.
Roeves had a hugely successful career in both theatre and screen which spanned six decades, starting in his home country of Scotland and moving to London and the United States.
Although he was renowned for his thuggish roles during his acting years, Vanessa says the opposite. She says he was a ‘softie’ in private.
His face became recognised around the world after he went on to appear in series of internationally successful films and television shows.
One of his best known roles was as rocker Vince Diver in the 1987 drama Tutti Frutti, alongside Robbie Coltrane and Emma Thompson.
Roeves had legions of fans who loved him for his manly performance in movies such as Stotz in Doctor Who, a Romulan captain in Star Trek and Colonel Edmund Munro in The Last Of The Mohicans.
Roeves was recently seen in the BBC series ‘The Nest’ at the beginning of this year. Nothing makes him happier than being on set with his fellow actors and he worked right till the end, says his agent.
According to his agent: ‘As well as being a truly dedicated and gifted actor, he was also a real gentleman and a delight to have as a client. We will miss him greatly and our thoughts and love go out to Vanessa and his family.’
