It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Millie Zuckerman (née Mark), Holocaust survivor and longtime supporter of the America Society for Yad Vashem. Millie was born in Humniska, Poland in September 1925. In 1942, when the Nazis declared that the village was to be Judenrein (“clean of Jews”), Millie and her family were arrested and moved to the town of Brzozów to perform hard labor. One Sunday, all the Jews were ordered to assemble in a stadium across from the town church the next day. Millie’s father decided his family must escape, so under the cover of night, the family went back to Humniska. Those who did not escape were murdered the following day. The Mark family found refuge with Michelina Kedra, a Polish friend and Righteous Gentile. For two years, they hid in Ms. Kendra’s attic, never seeing the light of day. After liberation, Millie lived for four years in the Bindermichl DP camp in Austria, where she met her husband Abe. Abe z’l had survived multiple ghettos and concentrations camps and worked at Schindler’s factory. The couple immigrated to the U.S. in 1949 where they dedicated their lives to remembering the six million who were murdered in the Shoah and became guardians of Yad Vashem. Millie was the matriarch of beautiful family that continues to grow and will carry on her legacy forever.
