Pete Shankle Cause of Death

Durham high school coach Pete Shankle died. He passed away on Friday morning, November 29, 2019. Shankle died of complications with cancer.

Pete Shankle began his coaching career began at Lowes Grove Junior High School in Durham in 1976 where he was the head football coach.

Shankle became an assistant basketball coach at Jordan High school in the last two years, and served as the assistant baseball coach at Southern Durham High School.

Shankle also served as the defensive coordinator and athletic director at Southern Durham.

“When I was the principal at Southern Durham, he was my athletic director. I never had to worry about athletics with him, I could focus on academics because he had it under control,” said Larry McDonald, the current athletic director for Durham Public Schools. “We have a lost a great one.”

Shankle was a member o the N.C. Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame and the George Whitfield Baseball Clinic Hall of Fame. He has earned several NCHSAA awards, including the Leon Brogden Special Person Award, the Outstanding Contribution and Recognition Award, and the Home Thompson Eight Who Make a Difference Award.
