Richard Gwyn’s voice is missed. RIP. Remembering his colum in the @TorontoStar is to revisit a time when columnists had a sense of national history that extended past the last government, and the Star aspired to be something greater than merely progressive.

Richard Gwyn, RIP. Talented columnist and author, and a true gentleman in this industry. Knew him for years. We finally appeared together on @TheAgenda in May 2012, just before his battle with Alzheimer’s took a difficult turn. He will be sorely missed.

Richard Gwyn deepIy loved Newfoundland and was ambassador extraordinaire. I met him at the Eastport Writers Festival in 2012 when I hosted @CBCWam on location and he was charming, delightful, and engaging. RIP Richard |@TorontoStar

Sad news re Richard Gwyn. I grew up reading his columns and then knew him as a Cabbagetown neighbour. I enjoyed his dry, insightful, penetrating wit and will remember fondly our discussions of Sir John A. and also the intricacies of party politics in Canada. May he RIP.

RIP Richard Gwyn. In addition to being a renowned journalist and author, Gwyn was a key player in a struggle between the then Department of Communications and CBNRC (now CSE) for control of COMSEC policy in Canada.

Richard Gwyn passed away. He was one of Canada’s great journalists, a sincere and funny man who was generous of his time for those willing to learn, and a boundless promoter of Newfoundland and Labrador art and culture.
He loved it here.
He wrote of his home in Salvage, Nfld:

Richard Gwyn asked me out for lunch one day. He took me to a place on Front Street. I asked him why he picked it. Said he: “I thought all you smart young people eat here!” I told him I was neither young nor smart, and we both laughed and ordered a fine lunch. RIP.

I met #RichardGwyn only once some 15 years ago. It was an honour. He was a legend in journalism. He was the author of many books. One of his most popular was the political biography of #PierreTrudeau The Northern Magus. It is still an excellent read. #RIP Richard Gwyn pic.twitter.com/RF0kZ8KOVG

So sad to see the passing of the great journalist Richard Gwyn. My favourite insight was his negative view of people who stay in their position for 2 years — just long enough to learn the job, but they get out before things start to go wrong.
