Rollie Clements had this photo in his office for years. This summer he thought I should have it while he was cleaning his classroom out.
This was the kind of coach, teacher, mentor, & friend Rollie was though. Rollie wasn’t just everywhere, he was anywhere his “kids” or peers were. This was the guy that stood in a mall line for 40 minutes just to get a picture with me (yes, I was the mall Easter Bunny) to both razz me and support me.This was the guy that pulled me out of class on occasional Monday mornings to question my poor choices over the weekend (how the heck did he find these things out!?) Or to take the time to gently remind me of the value of humility.I wasn’t a “bad” kid, but he believed I could always be better. And he would tell me that.He was the kind of guy that sat on the basketball bench with 3 to 4 strong-willed female coaches, and could calm them all down.He showed up at games and events when it didn’t matter. He got me one of my first jobs at the golf course. He wrote an amazing reference letter for my first *real* job. He was one of my biggest cheerleaders, which is ironic… because, well, if you know you know.He never forgot a detail. Or a stat. But he may have repeated the same game film or classroom stories, but that was because he delighted in those moments with each of his students and athletes. He was one of the good ones. A true legend. Some even say a myth. Rest easy, Rollie. You kept the faith!

Rollie Clements was the first non-family member who believed in me. He worked the system to get a non-college prep kid into Hoosier Boys State and Purdue University. I didn’t belong at either.
He knew I would meet someone like Catherine J. Sleeth to see me through Purdue and Law School.
Everyday I wake up and suit up to help the underdogs, People with Disabilities and seek social justice-I do so as a thank you to Rollie Clements. RIP my mentor.

I’m deeply saddened to hear about Rollie Clements passing. I had the privilege to play under his coaching for 4 years as a Carroll student. There wasn’t a moment during those 4 years that I ever thought he lost faith in my abilities as a player or my fellow teammates. He built each one of us to be a better player on the field and off the field.
Rollie was also the kind of person to be continuously checking in on players outside of athletics. My soccer experience at Carroll was one of a kind, largely impacted by the great coaching and character of Coach Clements. Coach, may you rest in peace and you will be dearly missed.
