Ronald Collings Death | Obituary – Swans passionate member Ronald Collings passed away at age 105, he and wife Esther (who passed away in 2019) was named Australia’s oldest living couple in 2018 .
The South Australian couple last week celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary, many years after meeting on the streets of Adelaide as teenagers in the 1930s.
They tied the knot at St Cuthbert’s Church in Prospect on October 19, 1938, and although they now live in separate rooms in an aged-care home in Goolwa, they meet for morning tea at 10 am every day without fail.
It’s said like a fine wine, you get better with age – and not only do the Collings say their inseparable love grows stronger by the day, they also catch up for a glass of red every afternoon.
Mr Collings can clearly recall the beginning of the road.
“The first time we met I was probably a teenager and she was about 16,” Mr Collings told Network 10’s The Project.
“Two girls came down the street dressed in blue and one was Esther. She’s always looked lovely, but in those days she had dark hair, blue eyes and she wasn’t bad-looking.”
Mrs Collings, too, had found her match.
“I met a wonderful man and fell in love,” Mrs Collings said.
“I thought he was quite handsome.”
Mr Collings was a travelling salesman for Souvenirs Australia, based in Adelaide, while Mrs Collings was a dressmaker.
She was as a dressmaker at Myer, worked as a yoga teacher and spent 15 years as a volunteer for people with disabilities.
The couple’s married life kicked off in Adelaide and later moved to Melbourne and Sydney, before they returned to Adelaide to retire.
They had two sons, a late daughter, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and would continue to live life in the fast lane well beyond their days with kids, seeing the sights of the world and spending their 90th birthdays in a hot-air balloon.
Mr Collings says reaching 80 years makes him sure of one thing.
“It means we’ve been married for a very long time.”
