Mom Watches As Daughter Drowns – Saturday afternoon saw the tragic separation of a mother and child by strong currents. A Swakopmund mom watched horrifically as her 4-year-old daughter identified as Shanique Grace Gases was snatched from her by a strong wave at the beach.
The mother almost drowned herself when she was desperately trying to rescue her daughter. The emergency personnel had to resuscitate the woman after she was rescued from the sea.

Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu the Crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, says the little girl went to the beach with her mother, brother, a cousin and a family friend.
“The girl was playing with her brother and cousin close to the seawater. The mother told us that she noticed a strong wave, all of a sudden, hitting over the kids and how her daughter was no longer at the spot she was playing.”
According to authorities, the mother ran into the strong current to save her daughter which almost cost her life.
He added by saying that divers from the sea rescue team arrived at the scene shortly and commenced immediate search for the girl. Her body was later discovered floating several metres from the scene, but her body disappeared again under the strong currents.
