McVay died Thursday, 13th of August 2020 at the age of 76, three days after he suffered serious head and neck injuries in a fall at home. According to the tweet, Tommy McVay was a popular and friendly face around Texas Tech football for nearly a quarter-century, close in the orbit of every head coach from the last years of the Spike Dykes era through the beginning of Matt Wells’ time.
McVay worked as the director of football operations but when he was not directing, he was one of the program’s most personable ambassadors, interacting with players from diverse backgrounds, making life easier for coaches and offering outreach to fans. We extend our condolences.
