RIP Tony Elliott, 73, who created Time Out as a self-published, self-distributed insider guide to London culture while he was on a summer break from college in 1968, and then grew it into a global media empire. What a journey he made.

During a bleak media-industry moment not unlike our own, Tony Elliott waltzed into NYC and created new jobs out of thin air for me and so many others. Together we formed lasting friendships and learned our craft, all thanks to him. RIP Tony.

Time Out NY gave many freelancers (myself included) incredible opportunities and added a lot to the city. RIP to its founder, Tony Elliott.

Tony Elliott, founder of @timeout RIP. So many of my cultural discoveries in London, especially in the 80s and 90s when the magazine also had an unmissable TV films section, were down to his publication. pic.twitter.com/mzVdhK0N8Q

‘He produced the first edition on the kitchen table in his mother’s house in Kensington with £70, part of a recent twenty-first birthday present from his aunt…’ RIP Tony Elliott, @TimeOutLondon founder:

Time Out was a huge part of my life through the 80s. Scalpelled and cow gummed up all those cinema ads. Checked the gig and theatre listings. Read all the politics. RIP Tony Elliott

I heard earlier today that my friend and former boss Tony Elliott died yesterday. He was a great boss – probably my most supportive ever – an incisive thinker, and a very special person in many ways. I shall miss meeting up with him. RIP.

RIP Tony Elliott, founder of the listings magazine that was always so much more than just a listings magazine.

RIP Tony Elliott. In its prime Time Out set the standard for local listings and features and TO Eating & Drinking was a formidable competitor. Hats off…

RIP Tony Elliott, who self-published Time Out London from a kitchen table in 1968 and grew it into a global media brand without which I’d not have the better-punning half of my friendship circle and my life in Amsterdam. Thank you. pic.twitter.com/Kl3I06JSAG

So sad to hear that Tony Elliott, publisher of Time Out, has died. It was the cultural hub of its day, Tony at the helm, forever committed to artistic integrity – even when capitalism threatened to smother it. I learned my craft there aged 19 to 30. Happy crazy days. RIP Tony pic.twitter.com/nySn5fqJz8

We presented Tony Elliott with a lifetime achievement award at the British Media Awards a few years ago. He had the rare achievement of being responsible for creating a magazine that everybody he ever met was likely to have read at some point. He was a lovely guy too. RIP.

A publication without which many of us London immigrants would never have found what to do with ourselves. RIP Tony Elliott.

Sad news. Back in the late 70s on the mean streets of Croydon I gained much of my movie education in London’s repertory cinemas I only knew about through Time Out. RIP Tony Elliott
